Spicebird - Mozilla-based Collaboration Suite

PhotobucketSpicebird is built on Thunderbird and Lightning, the powerful extension that adds calendaring functions to Thunderbird. Additionally it seems to integrate SamePlace, a Firefox extension that provides instant messaging capabilities based on the Jabber protocol.

After watching the Spicebird presentation I was left greatly impressed and wishing it was available now.

To begin with, it provides a helpful dashboard that shows recent messages, web feed items, an agenda, a calendar and a couple of clocks showing local and foreign times. Other tabs provide a complete email inbox, contacts list, and calendar.

Spicebird adds a few new tricks on top of the foundation products base: it autodetects events and their dates so you can quickly add an emailed event to your calendar, and it provides a single email and instant messaging contact list so you can see if a sender is connected and IM him or her in a snap.

According to the product description page it will also allow to post to your blog and edit wiki pages for a complete collaborative and enterprise-oriented solution but this is not shown in the presentation.

Robotic Foosball Table

A team went and built a robotic foosball table for those times when nobody wants to play with you. It was done for a college course and takes up a lot of space. "The premise is simple: servos coupled with a micro-controller operate the arms of the table, while a camera above the action monitors the game, including the location of the ball and the opponents moves, then processes that information using a custom AI." Not bad work, but they should have used belts instead of gears to cut down on the thing's footprint. Still a good start though considering it was done for a class. God knows the only thing I did for college courses was get high as shit and wander into the wrong classroom.

Monty Python Beast of Arrrggghhh Plush Hat

Photobucket

You can never go wrong if you can find clothing that originates from anything Monty Python. and this Beast of Arrrggghhh Plush Hat is no exception. With its multitude of eyes you can’t mistake it for anything else. And anyone who knows anything will know where this comes from. That will be enough for them to take you seriously despite the silliness of the hat. Sort of a metaphor for all of Monty Python.

Bacon Ends and Pieces

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I received this phone picture from from my girlfriend and some friends/readers of ours. So.....what in the hell are "Bacon Ends and Pieces"!? I figured that they were the leftovers that did not make the bacon cut and from reading a little bit more about them, I think I am correct. Does that mean that they consist of all fat? I wouldn't go that far but I would expect them to be a little bit more fatty that premium sliced bacon. So now on to the real question....What would Bacon Ends and Pieces be used for? Bacon kabobs? Bacon soup? Bacon treats!? Well according to some sites, these little jewels are used primarily to season or top dishes. Glad to hear that people are using every last piece of bacon!

Thanks Kitty and Karen ;-)

Personas - The Firefox Theme Extension

Photobucket

Are you tired of your old school grey theme on your Firefox browser? Do you want something a little more exciting? If so then head over to the Mozilla Labs and download the Firefox Personas Extension....or just click here to download. Personas offers many new and exciting themes to spice up your Firefox browser including nature themes, holiday themes, sport themes and, you guessed it, Firefox themes. Right now there are probably around 20-30 themes to choose from and I am sure that one of them will fancy you. Right now I have mine set on the Snowman theme for Christmas but I am sure I will probably set it to the Firefox Logo theme after the 25th. Also, soon Mozilla will be releasing an API that will allow developers and designers to submit Personas that are based on Web content, including support for anything that can load in a content window such as HTML, CSS, PNG, JPG, Javascript, SVG and Canvas. That way you can create your own SiBlog theme and share it with everyone else. Viva Firefox!

Here is a quick example of how Firefox looks with the Personas Extension -

Special Dead

Our good friend and daily reader Luke brought this "Special Dead" movie to my attention last night. Check out the trailer....

Plot - When a zombie plague infects Camp Special Dude, a dude ranch for the mentally handicapped, a ragtag band of campers and counselors struggles to survive the night. Led by the indifferent, nunchuck-wielding head counselor, Mac, and his wheelchair-bound sister Dale, the unlikely heroes fight their way off the mountain as, one by one, they're picked off and join the ranks of the walking dead. It is a campy stampede of blood, boobs and gore as some "very special" people show that they can kick some serious undead ass.

Unicorn Deer

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Roaming somewhere in the woods around Elma is the unicorn deer.

Captured on a motion-sensitive game camera, the adult deer appears to have a long antler sticking out of its head between it’s eyes.

“It looks like a unicorn deer,” said Dave Ebeling, the hunter-photographer who caught the deer on camera Oct. 16.

“I thought it was some kind of joke, but how can that be?” said the 46-year-old Ebeling, who added the photo was not retouched. “I got it [on camera].”

Ebeling, who has been hunting since he was 16, has never seen anything like it.

He showed the picture to a select few hunter friends. They suggested that the antler might be a piece of another buck’s antler that became lodged in the deer’s head during a fight.

But Ebeling said he didn’t think so, because three weeks after the camera took the first picture, it recorded another image. It appears to be the same deer because the antler is in the same spot as the first photo.

“If it was something like [a piece of another deer’s antler], it would have been off or turned sideways, because they fight,” he said.

Tim Spierto, senior wildlife biologist with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, said he has never seen a deer quite like the one pictured, but he did have a possible explanation for the antler.

“He must have bumped that antler fairly early on in development,” Spierto said, adding that such an injury may have led to the extra antler. “Bumping it or scraping it could cause it to form another antler right at the injury point,” he said.

Spierto said he has seen similar situations. But in those cases, the extra antler formed more in the center of the deer’s head, between its existing antlers.

“We’ve seen antler deformations before,” he said, adding that they’re usually accompanied by another characteristic.

“When I see things like this, I ask if there’s an injury to the opposite hind leg,” Spierto said. “More often than not, I’ll see an archery wound or a broken bone that’s mended. Why it affects antler development, I have no idea why, but it’s one of those weird breaks of nature.”

Unless it’s a genetic flaw, the deer will not have the extra antler when it regrows its rack next year, Spierto said.

That’s assuming the deer makes it through the muzzleloading hunting season, which ends Tuesday, and then through the winter.

“I just wish somebody would shoot it so we’d know what that was,” Ebeling said.

Playful Puppy Surprises Urinating Man

A drunken man urinating through a fence got a nasty surprise when a playful puppy in the adjoining lot latched onto his member.

Kann Veasna took a break from drinking wine at a street stall to relieve himself through a hole in a fence, according to news agency DPA.

However a puppy spotted the Mr Veasna's appendage as it poked through and apparently thinking it was a toy latched on, newspaper Rasmei Kampuchea reported.

Suffering lacerations Mr Veasna fronted up to a hospital in Phnom Penh for treatment and was forced to tell the embarrassing story of injuries.

"It's undoubtedly sore now, but luckily it should still be useful to him in the future,'' a doctor was quoted as saying by DPA.

Will Ferrell and Pearl are back for another funny skit....

The Shot Caller - No Need to Watch the Clock Anymore

I remember the times in college when we would play the power hour or century club. The one thing that always sucked was watching the clock to see when the next shot was and keeping track of what number you were on. At first this task was easy but after shot 50 or so things started to get a little bit more blurry. The Shot Caller takes care of all of this for you!

I also had a buddy who made a soundtrack for power hour which was really cool. It was a compilation of great drinking and partying songs and at every minute Homer would interrupt with a "Mmmmmmm Beer". What a great invention! I think I still have the CD somewhere.....

"w00t" Crowned Word of Year by U.S. Dictionary

Yahoo: "w00t" crowned word of year by U.S. dictionary

"w00t," an expression of joy coined by online gamers, was crowned word of the year on Tuesday by the publisher of a leading U.S. dictionary.

Massachusetts-based Merriam-Webster Inc. said "w00t" -- typically spelled with two zeros -- reflects a new direction in the American language led by a generation raised on video games and cell phone text-messaging.

It's like saying "yay," the dictionary said.

"It could be after a triumph or for no reason at all," Merriam-Webster said.

Visitors to Merriam-Webster's Web site were invited to vote for one of 20 words and phrases culled from the most frequently looked-up words on the site and submitted by readers.

Runner-up was "facebook" as a new verb meaning to add someone to a list of friends on the Web site Facebook.com or to search for people on the social networking site.

Merriam-Webster President John Morse said "w00t" reflected the growing use of numeric keyboards to type words.

"People look for self-evident numeral-letter substitutions: 0 for O; 3 for E; 7 for T; and 4 for A," he said. "This is simply a different and more efficient way of representing the alphabetical character."

One Web site, www.thinkgeek.com, already sells T-shirts with the word "w00t" printed on the front.

"w00t belongs to gamers the world over. It seems to have been derived from the obsolete 'whoot' which essentially is another way to say 'hoot' which itself is a shout or derisive laugh," Think Geek said on its Web site.

"But others maintain that w00t is the sound several players make while jumping like bunnies in Quake III," it added, referring to a popular video game.

Online gamers often replace numbers and symbols with letters to form what Merriam-Webster calls an "esoteric computer hacker language" known as "l33t speak." This translates into "leet," which is short for "elite."

A separate survey of words used in the media and on the Internet by California-based Global Language Monitor produced a different set of winners on Tuesday. "Hybrid" took top honors as word of the year with "climate change" the top phrase.

Global Language Monitor, which uses an algorithm to track words and phrases in the media and on the Internet, said "hybrid" had broad connotations of "all things green from biodiesel to wearing clothes made of soy to global warming."

Runner-up was "surge," based on the "surge" of 30,000 extra U.S. troops deployed to Iraq since mid-June, followed by the word "Bluetooth," a technology used to connect electronic devices via radio waves.

"The English language is becoming more and more a globalized language every year," said Global Language Monitor president Paul Payack, noting that this year's list included words also culled from India, Singapore, China and Australia.

Analog Emoticon Stamp

If only I physically wrote letters and notes anymore I might use this, but with my chicken scratch it is probably better that I stick to the computer ;-)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Technology is so advanced today that you can convey the most extreme emotions with just a few simple characters. :) means you are happy; :-P means you are joking; >:( means you are mad; and >:) means you are evil and having a good ol' time. In the olden days, people didn't have it as good. Back then, you actually had to write them a letter expressing how you felt. Such a waste of energy - except for the times you are seriously emotional. Those times still need the hand written touch. But why leave emoticons behind?

With the Emoticon Transforming Stamp, you don't have to limit emoticons to online chatter. It's made of 100% silicone, which means it can squish and flex to make almost any sort of face. Once you get the emotion you want, stamp it on your letter. Once you let go, the stamp will snap back into its original face, ready for action. A great way to make love letters more fun, board meeting minutes more enjoyable, and paychecks more playful. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words - so an emoticon must be worth at least 487! :-D

US Patent 6,681,419 - Urinal Headrest

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

U.S. Patent 6,681,419 describes a headrest to be installed above urinals so when you're pass-out drunk you can still piss without falling over. It's ridiculous. And judging from the picture it's just the thing for people with only one arm and no legs beneath their knees. Now if you can't even stand up straight long enough to take a piss I question why you're still at the bar. I guarantee you're only hitting on ugly women (and possibly dudes). It's best to just leave. That said, I want these installed at my local watering hole. Except above the deep-fryer, because that's where I tend to go when I'm plastered.

Imagine jumping on your treadmill or stationary bike and racing people around the world! I think it would be a blast!

BoomShuffle

Being the big music fan that I am I have to have a good music source at work to keep me happy. I think I have jumped from every music site there is - Yahoo Music, Pandora, MeeMix, Deezer, etc. Recently I have been using Deezer which is an online service that let's you create your playlists from their vast library of songs. I love this service but lately they have been having issues with songs not being able to be played and other stuff of that sort. Since I am always looking for a bigger and better music source I stumbled across a similar site called BoomShuffle today. The idea is very similar except that you can have friends edit/update your playlists if you want them too. I think this a great way to find out about new and upcoming bands. The only downfall right now is that the selection is not nearly is large as Deezer, but I like the UI alot more and the sharing concept is really cool. Unless Deezer fixes their issues I think I might be leaving another music site yet again. Check out BoomShuffle and my mix

Two of my favorite things - Zombies and Army of Darkness! How can it get better than this! I don't normally read or get comics but I might have to for this one!

Bacon Wrapped Turkey

I can't believe I missed this before the turkey holiday season....I must be getting slow! I have actually thought about doing this before but did not know if it was really possible....guess it is! So if you cook turkey for Christmas then you can use this recipe, otherwise you will probably be waiting until next Thanksgiving.

Someone should wrap a chicken or Cornish gaming hen....

One Year Anniversary

One year ago today I was sitting around bored on my computer and decided to create this blog. It first started out as just an experiment (Post #1) to see if I really wanted to do it or not and then it slowly turned into a fun and exciting hobby. The blog has gone through many ups and downs, make-overs, a number of posters and right at 715 posts. So to commemorate the one year anniversary I have decided to compile a list of my Top Ten Favorite Posts of Teh Siblog

10 - Sleeper House - The only reason this post made it into the list is because I spent a good 2-3 days researching this house.

9 My Very Own Bacon Concoction: Beer-Boiled and Bacon-Wrapped Cheese Brat - One of my bacon inspired inventions but this one was really just my version of the tasty treat made by those crazy people at Maxim.

8 Sea Salt Grinder + Bac'n Buds = Siblog Bacon Salt Grinder - Inspired by the guys that made the Bacon Salt.

7 Top Ten Firefox Extensions - Just because I love the Firfox browser and project. I can't wait until Firefox 3.

6 Baconator Review: I Fought the Baconator, but the Baconator Won - This was the most painful post and therefore needed to be in the top ten.

5 Up and Running on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn - I love the Open Source community on the web and this project is very special to me. Lately I have found great interest in helping spread the word about this amazing Linux OS and that is why it ranks so high up in my list.

4 Chuck Norris!!! - These lists that were composed by Walter were absolutely hilarious and have drawn in the most amount of people to Teh Siblog.

3 Return of the Bacon Costume - I love this post because it was one of the more extensive and certainly the most fun of the Bacon projects that I have done.

2 Eveybody, Meet My Google Twin - How often do you find someone across the planet with the exact same name as you!? This post was great because I got to harass my Google Twin as well as make my first Wikipedia entry for "Google Twin".

1 Best Bacon Ever! - There are a number of reasons why this post is by far my favorite. 1) It appeared on Digg's front page and made its way up to #1. 2) It started up my posts on bacon. 3) It jumped Teh Siblog's page views to another level and increase the traffic dramatically and....4) It really kick started my love for the blogging hobby!

Even though you don't see any Zombie, Halo or other posts on this list I think it sums up what this blog is all about. I am sure you can also see that all but one of these posts are mine and that is just because my view point is jaded. I love all the work from everyone especially Walter that has made this site what it is.

....And a especially want to thank all the readers out there, which at this point may be around one or two ;-)

Thanks for a great first year!

Poo and Pee Stuffed Animals

So cute! I can't wait to get my set. The yellow one reminds me of a gumdrop! I think when you mix these two you get butt-pee! The most explosive deadly of them all.
