February - Top Ten Month

For the month of February I will be doing "Top Ten" lists every weekday and maybe even on the weekends if you are lucky. Some of these "Top Ten" lists are from my own personal opinion while others I may have taken from other sites. Also some may be listed in the order in which I like them while others are just random collections with no order to them at all. Let me know if there is a list/topic that you want me to cover.

....I will also be doing regular posts here and there

.....And Even More Bacon

This one is specifically for you bacon fanatics!!!! Have you ever wanted a wallet that looks like it is made out of bacon? or bacon band-aids? What about a bacon air freshener to keep reminding you of BLTs, Bacon Cereal and clogged arteries? Well now you can own any of these and more! Check them out at the world's greatest online toy store, Archie McPhee!

Dell is now offering desktops without Windows pre-installed

Dell is now offering Desktops with no operating system specifically targeting Linux users. Now I am not a Linux fanboy, but this is a great step for the open-source OS as well as all applications competing against Microsoft, who now has their new OS - Vista available. This is great for the OS market, I hope it increases the usage of Linux and other applications.

About the new look - Update

I decided to give Teh SiBlog a makeover after reading a tutorial on how to fake a Web 2.0 logo. See any similarities? From there I had a friend at work (Jeff) help me create a picture and alter my page to make it look right. Let me know what you think! Share your thoughts and recommendations.

And now I have added a favicon (little favorite icon next to URL) to my site. I used MyFavatar to host the image as well as give me the code to put into my HTML. Hmmmmm......maybe tooo many raindrops?

Solid State Hard Drive - The Future is Here

Taken from TomsHardware.com -
All of today's mainstream hard drives are based on rotating magnetic platters, allowing for relatively high capacities of up to 750 GB per hard drive. But the technology has limits, as the data transfer speeds did not increase much over time. As a matter of fact, hard drives are the slowest components in modern PCs.Most attempts to speed up storage performance either use caches to store data that is used frequently, or they deploy faster memory solutions such as SDRAM or DDR-SDRAM. However, all of these require the steady supply of energy by means of buffer batteries or by sucking power out of the grid. Solid state hard drives based on Flash memory are similar to SDRAM-based solutions, but they are unaffected by power-related volatility issues, which plague SDRAM units. Data that is written to Flash stays - even throughout power interruptions.

Flash hardware has intrinsic benefits, as it benefits from extremely short access times, but it also has specific advantages for the upcoming Windows Vista operating system. Flash memory as an optional cache allows the user to take advantage of Vista's "ReadyBoost" feature, allowing for a peppier PC. Adding Flash memory to a hard drive makes for a hybrid hard drive, which allows Vista to intelligently prioritize data according to frequently used applications and client schedule to cut down waiting times even further. The ideal solution is, however, a hard drive that is entirely based on an array of high performance Flash memory. The downside is that Flash memory is expensive, running at about $25/GB. We did not receive pricing information on the Samsung prototype that would help for consumer projection. As with all new hardware, Flash-based drives should continue to become more affordable as time goes on.
Read more at Toms Hardware.

Here is a video of how a mainstream hard drive works. Notice in the above article it stats how these hard drives "require the steady supply of energy by means of buffer batteries or by sucking power out of the grid". Watch how much the hard drive arm moves for simple operations. The new solid state drives will be much more power efficient....think about the affects on laptop battery life and your electricity bill.

Amazing Macro Photos

Macro photography refers to close-up photography; the classical definition that the image projected on the "film plane" (i.e film or a digital sensor) is the same size as the subject. On 35 mm film (for example), the lens must have the ability to focus on an area at least as small as 24×36 mm, as this is the size of the image on the film. This is known as "life-size magnification" or simply 1:1.

Check out these rad macro photos of insects from Lord V. on Flickr.com. Some of them are kinda scary, like the wasp ones.

Web Site Kicks Sand in Faces of GIs in Iraq Asking for Mats to Ease Hardship of Sleeping on Ground

-Taken from FOXnews.com

An American GI assigned to one of the harshest posts in Iraq had a simple request last week for a Wisconsin mattress company: send some floor mats to help ease the hardship of sleeping on the cold, bug-infested ground.

What he got, instead, was a swift kick from the company's Web site, which not only refused the request but added insult to injury with the admonition, "If you were sensible, you and your troops would pull out of Iraq."

Army Sgt. Jason Hess, stationed in Taji, Iraq, with the 1st Cavalry Division, said he emailed his request to Discount-mats.com because he and his fellow soldiers sleep on the cold ground, which contains sand mites, sand flies and other disease carriers.

In his email, dated Jan. 16, 2007, he asked the Web-based company, registered to Faisal Khetani, an American Muslim of Pakistani descent:

"Do you ship to APO (military) addresses? I'm in the 1st Cavalry Division stationed in Iraq and we are trying to order some mats but we are looking for ships to APO first."

On the same day, Hess received this reply:

"SGT Hess,

We do not ship to APO addresses, and even if we did, we would NEVER ship to Iraq. If you were sensible, you and your troops would pull out of Iraq.

Bargain Suppliers
Discount-Mats.com"

Khetani on Monday told FOX News that the person responsible for the email reply had been fired. The Web site, meanwhile, has been temporarily taken down.

Hess emailed that he has since found two mat suppliers willing to ship to an APO address in Iraq.

Reader's Choice - Bacon

I asked the two readers of Teh SiBlog what they wanted more of and they have responded. The answer was simple and expected....More Bacon!

You may remember a post about a month ago entitled "Best Bacon Ever!" This post explored a simple and fun journey to K-Mart that was ruined by horrible bacon. Here is the follow up.....

Shortly after the experience I contacted the company about their product. A representative of the company immediately got a hold of me. This nice lady from Smithfield that I spoke with was very sorry to hear of my disappointment and was more than willing to compensate for the tragic experience. I was told that she would send me a coupon in the mail to cover the expenses of the bad bacon, which I estimated around $1.79. The letter and coupon came in the mail yesterday and not only did she hook it up for the bad bacon but she also included another coupon to help grease my arteries! not one, but two $2 coupons! Radical!

Here are some of the original pics along with my letter and coupons -

Speaking with the Treasurer of Teh SiBlog this puts us at 400 times our previous earnings! It was also noted that we should be able to leverage this money into purchasing Lettuce, Tomato, and Bread for a solid BLT meal. Thank you Smithfield!

Potty Training Tutorial

I am feeling really lazy today so I am just going to post a funny Japanese movie on potty training. Not only does it cover "Number 1" but it also covers "Number 2"! This instructional video has some disturbing characters in it....you will see. And I wish someone would translate all the Japanese for me!

If only I had this movie and accessories when I was younger!!! Then I would not have so many bad memories. Heh

Jam, Jelly and Preserves....What's the difference!?!?!?

I know many of you like me have spent many a sleepless nights pondering important questions in life. One of these questions that has tormented us for many years is - What is the difference between Jam, Jelly and Preserves? I have traveled many a miles across the world to find this answer in Orrville, Ohio (Smucker's):

JELLY is made from fruit juice. Jelly is clear and firm enough to hold its shape when turned out of its container.

JAM is made from a blend of crushed pieces of fruit and fruit puree.

PRESERVES contain whole or large pieces of fruit, making them thicker and more fruit-filled than jams or jellies.

MARMALADE is jelly with shreds of citrus fruit peel.

CONSERVES are jams made from a mixture of citrus fruits and can also include nuts.

FRUIT BUTTERS are made from fruit pulp and sugar cooked together. There is no butter in fruit butter. The term may have developed to describe the appearance of the product or because it is a spread.

CHUTNEY and RELISH are flavorful, seasoned condiments with a consistency similar to jam. Chutney is typically made with fruits and relish is typically made with vegetables.

Now we all can rest easy tonight knowing that we have the answer to one of life's many riddles

What are your Phobias?

What are your Phobias? One of my phobias is Spheksophobia (fear of wasps). It is always fun to see if there are actual phobias for things that scare you. This list has some really interesting phobias on it including:

Russophobia- Fear of Russians
Porphyrophobia- Fear of the color purple
Phobophobia- Fear of phobias
Novercaphobia- Fear of your step-mother
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia- Fear of long words

Sometimes I don't even know if some of these are real or make believe......oh well it's entertaining. And for this interesting topic I thought I would hot-link another random image that is kinda disturbing -

Pop vs Soda

Does it bother you when someone asks you if you want a "soda"? Does it bother you when someone tells you about their favorite "pop"? What about when someone calls every carbonated drink a "coke"? Take a look at this map of the USA, that shows what people call a carbonated soft drink in their areas. Maybe you will learn that you are like the people around you and maybe you will learn that you are out of place. POP RULES!!!!

Teh SiBlog hits 1,000 views

This is a monumental moment in the sites history. What this means is that not only have I viewed the site 900 times, but that someone else maybe has!!! Teh SiBlog is well on its way to becoming a superpower on the information superhighway. It is my prediction that around this time next year Teh SiBlog will surpass Myspace as the top viewed site on the web. For this special occasion I have hot-linked a sweet image. Check it!

My First Flash Game

Since I have been playing a lot of free flash games online, I thought that I would look into creating my own. So after reading a few articles, it seemed like it was relatively easier to do than with other languages so I thought why not. I then downloaded a trial to to SWiSHmax, which is a Flash tool similar to Macromedia, and began to play around. I figured that if I played around with it I could figure some stuff out on my own.....And I did - I figured out how to draw a pretty picture and how to make a bunny hop across the pretty picture. Unfortunately this doesn't make a rad game to play, rather just a sweet movie to watch. So, I found a tutorial of how to make a game. I pretty much followed what the tutorial said, stuck in my own picture and *bam!* Simon's first flash game. The object of the game is pretty complex - you scramble the picture and then you unscramble it.

Now, for all of you out there who now want to hire me to create sweet flash movies and games, I have some bad news for you. The trial was only for 14 days and has since expired......but if you want to buy it for me I would be fine with that.

Alpha Dog

Rating: B-
When I read an article about this movie over a year ago in one of my magazine I was actually quite interested in seeing it. First of all it seemed to be an "indie" movie, secondly I love drug movies, and lastly I love true stories. I was a little skeptical since the cast had JT and one of my all-time favorite horrible actors Bruce Willis, but I figured I would give it a chance. So I watched for it in the local independent theaters, but after not seeing it for months I figured that I had missed it. Then.....Poof!......it was showing on the big screens. So my girlfriend, who is a big JT fan, and I went to go see it last Friday. This is what we thought-

The movie started off with some horrible acting and I thought we were in for a long night, but as the movie progressed the acting got better (or I got used to it). The storyline, though it was familiar to me, was very interesting and I found myself hooked into the movie. By the climax I felt like I was actually involved in the whole mess that they had got themselves into, and though I knew what was going to happen, I didn't want it to happen.

Overall the movie was put together pretty well. It kept my attention and reeled me in. The acting was horrible at times, but also pretty good at times and surprisingly I thought JT wasn't too bad. I don't know how closely it follows the true story, but I thought it did a fairly good job. In my opinion it deserves a 'B-'.

Why didn't I think of that!!!!

.......I ask myself this a few times everyday while I surf the internet, but today it really hit really hard. This guy Dann has a blog and a mission. His blog - Dann Drinks Beer. His mission - to drink a new beer each day for a year. Pure genuis! In his blog he tells you what beer he drank, a rating of the beer (1-5), and a nice personal review of the beer. So once again I think "Why didn't I think of that!!!!". I have a blog and I like beer....I was perfect for this!!! Oh well, I will think of something brilliant one day. Great Idea Dann!

Pet Peeve #2

So I met up with a friend early-early this morning for some breakfast at a local establishment. We were supposed to meet there at around 6:30 am. So being the kind of person that I am, I show up at 6:20. No cars were in the parking lot except for the staff's and their cars were all parked in the back. So I pick a spot that is about in the middle of the lot (nothing special like the front spot). Since I am a little early I decide to sit and listen to my radio for a few minutes before going in. While sitting there I hear a crunch of the snow and look over to find this random guy parking right next to me. I am the only car in the lot and he decides to park next to me? Again....I am not anywhere near the front parking spot (actually kinda in the back) and this guy decides to park next to me. Arg! I thought it was an unspoken rule of parking to leave at least one spot in between you and the next person. Kinda like the unspoken rule of the men's bathroom - you don't use the urinal right next to someone unless you have to! You always leave at least one empty urinal in between you and the next person. Now, I understand parking next to someone if you are trying to score the sweetest spot in the lot or if the lot is full, but the front spots were all empty as well as the rest of the lot! Some people just confuse the sh!# out of me. It was just plain silly but really peeved me. I should have slapped one of my youparklikeanasshole.com flyers on his window for the dickhead move.

Apple's iPhone

So less than a week after canceling my contract with Cingular and purchasing a Blackberry Pearl through T-Mobile, Apple Inc. (new name) announces the iPhone. I am not a fan of Apple, infact I usually say that I hate Apple, but this phone looks pretty amazing and could very well revolutionize the industry. Functionality of the iPhone includes an 8 GB iPod (Video and Music), Web Browser (not just text like my Blackberry, but actual color html websites), Email system, Map system, and....oh yeah a phone. No buttons, all touchscreen and very smart technology at that. The device also is only a little bit bigger than a SLVR (acording to this comparison)! Read this review by Gizmodo.com who actually got to use the product for 15 minutes.

The iPhone has had such an impact on the industry already in its less-than-24-hour life that it has plummeted its rivals stock. Check it out
Black = RIM/Blackberry
Yellow = Palm
Blue = Apple
Green = Nokia
Red = Motorola

This revolutionary product is being offered by Cingular and Apple in June (I believe) for a measly $599 plus 2 year contract. Some say "Who would want to spend that kind of money on a device like that?", I think we all know that the Apple fanboys across the world will be buying them as well as everyone who wants the latest and greatest in technology. I think the better question is "Who would want a two-year contract from Cingular?". Some are skeptical of how it will fare in the market but I think it is safe to say that it will be changing the way we look at phones for the future.

Here are some more pictures for everyone:

Andre the Giant - The Greatest Drunk on Earth

The Modern Drunkard Magazine recently published an article entitled The Greatest Drunk on Earth about Andre the Giant and his drinking habits. The article describes how Andre the Giant was not only a great wrestler and actor (The Princess Bride), but he also had quite a knack for drinking. The man, who suffered from a rare glandular disease, acromegaly, which caused his body to over-produce growth hormones, loved to drink and could consume quite a lot more than the average man. Here is one excerpt from the article....

"You won’t find it in the Guinness Book of World Records, but Andre the Giant holds the world record for the largest number of beers consumed in a single sitting. These were standard 12-ounce bottles of beer, nothing fancy, but during a six-hour period Andre drank 119 of them. It was one of the few times Andre got drunk enough to pass out, which he did in a hallway at his hotel...... That’s a beer every three minutes, non stop"

Why Cingular sucks and T-Mobile doesn't

I was one of the last people to get weighed down by a cell phone. I pushed it off for years until I was forced by my company to purchase one. That was in 2004 and I signed a one-year contract with AT&T since they were one of the only providers in Gunnison. While with AT&T I was fairly happy with the service, customer service, and rates.
About six months into the contract I received a notice that Cingular was buying out AT&T Wireless and that my account would be switched over. At first I was excited because they offered a lot of media and it look like a good wireless company. Unfortunately I was wrong. I remember my first experience with them was horrible. Being a college student I didn’t have much money and the first bill I received was outrageous. It took me hours to resolve the issue and they seemed to not care about my business or me as their customer. I continued to have billing related issues with them for just under a year when my phone broke. Since I was locked into a contract and couldn’t afford the fees of breaking the legal agreement, I was forced to purchase a new phone and a 2-year contract. From that point everything went from bad to worse; billing issues almost every month and horrible customer service.
When I purchased the phone I decided to buy insurance since it was a nice phone and I was told that I could just simply walk in to any Cingular store and get a new one. Well less than one year into the contract my phone broke and when I went in to exchange my phone they told me that they couldn’t. Instead I was told I had to send my phone off to a company who would then send me a used phone (so I paid the $6 a month for a used phone!?). This process would also take 2 weeks and cost me shipping and handling. Since my cell phone is my only mode of tele-communication I did not have that kind of time. So I had to purchase a new phone and instead of purchasing it through them I bought one online for approximately one third the cost that they were trying to stick to me. Since then I have been waiting for my contract to end so that I could get away from this terrible company.
Miraculously, my father’s company just switched to T-Mobile. To do this T-Mobile bought out all of the employee’s current plans and offered them discounted phones with good rates. When he told me this I asked him to try to hook me up. I figured we would have to pull some strings or do something sneaky but he simply just gave me a number and told me to call. I called and left Becky, my hopeful savior, a quick message. When she called back, she knew that I wasn’t part of the company but was still going to honor the special. I was a bit skeptical on what kind of deal I would get but she really hooked it up! First of all, they are paying for my cancellation fees in T-Mobile credit. This will knock $150 off of my first bills covering the cancellation charge from Cingular. They are also waiving the $35 activation fee and I am getting a new Blackberry Pearl for $75 ($50 mail-in-rebate) instead of $199 which is the deal for new customers. The rates of T-Mobile are also far better than Cingular. I am getting the same voice plan, text plan, and adding the Blackberry package for the same price as I was paying before for voice and text alone. If I was to add Blackberry options through Cingular it would be $30 more. Thank you T-Mobile!

What is even cooler is that I was told that this same sweet deal is available to friends and family. Check out the promo flyer and give her a call!

Rest in Peace Darrent Williams

Taken from The Rocky Mountain News -
"Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was killed and two other people were wounded in downtown Denver early Monday when the occupant of a passing vehicle unloaded a handgun into the limo in which Williams was a passenger.

Williams, 24, became the city’s first homicide victim of 2007 when he was shot shortly after 2 a.m. as he and a group of friends, including Broncos wide receiver Javon Walker, were driven away from a nightclub at 10th and Broadway.

Denver police say Williams or his friends were involved in an altercation at a club called The Shelter, a dispute that may have prompted the gunman to pursue the distinctive white Hummer stretch limo a few blocks onto the northbound lanes of 11th and Speer.

There, the gunman and others riding in a white sports utility vehicle pulled alongside the limo and fired several shots, leaving bullet holes splayed alongside the driver’s side of the vehicle and shattering a rear tinted window.
