Ubuntu (GNOME) Cheat Sheet / Keyboard Shortcut

I have been trying to find a Cheat Sheet or Keyboard Shortcut list out on the web but have not been able to find anything remotely complete......So I went out to all the various sources and found all the shortcuts, hints, keystokes, etc that I could find and I compiled a list of them.

Also, before everyone rips me a new one....I have not really put them in any particular order, so sorry about that. Another thing is that I have not tried all of these and some of them may be false so please let me know if any don't work and I will correct it. Send me any new shortcuts, hints, etc and I will try to keep it updated

General keyboard shortcuts

Ctrl+A = Select all (In Documents, Firefox, Nautilus, etc, not Terminal)
Ctrl+C = Copy (In Documents, Firefox, Nautilus, etc, not Terminal)
Ctrl+V = Paste (In Documents, Firefox, Nautilus, etc, not Terminal)

F9 = Toggle Sidebar
F2 = Rename
Ctrl+Shift+N = Create new folder

Ctrl+N = New (Create a new document, not in terminal)
Ctrl+O = Open (Open a document, not in terminal)
Ctrl+S = Save (Save the current document, not in terminal)
Ctrl+P = Print (Print the current document, not in terminal)

One Year Anniversary

One year ago today I was sitting around bored on my computer and decided to create this blog. It first started out as just an experiment (Post #1) to see if I really wanted to do it or not and then it slowly turned into a fun and exciting hobby. 2 Eveybody, Meet My Google Twin - How often do you find someone across the planet with the exact same name as you!? This post was great because I got to harass my Google Twin as well as make my first Wikipedia entry for "Google Twin".

1 Best Bacon Ever! - There are a number of reasons why this post is by far my favorite. 1) It appeared on Digg's front page and made its way up to #1. 2) It started up my posts on bacon. 3) It jumped Teh Siblog's page views to another level and increase the traffic dramatically and....4) It really kick started my love for the blogging hobby!

Even though you don't see any Zombie, Halo or other posts on this list I think it sums up what this blog is all about. I am sure you can also see that all but one of these posts are mine and that is just because my view point is jaded. I love all the work from everyone especially Walter that has made this site what it is.

....And a especially want to thank all the readers out there, which at this point may be around one or two ;-)

Return of the Bacon Costume

Many moons ago I posted an amazing Bacon Costume that was made by the Junkyard Clubhouse. The post included the instructions of how to make this bacon costume yourself. So when it came time for Halloween this year you will never guess what I made. Though mine did not come out nearly as nice, I was very proud of it! One alteration that I did make to the costume was a restroom flap for easy access. Check it!

I usually try not to whine too much but I every once in a while I gotta, so....

I am sure you all have been noticing this over the years.....What in the hell has happened to Laffy Taffy! Don't get me wrong the candy itself is still the teeth rotting sugar putty it have always been, but what has happened to the jokes!? I remember buying this candy solely for the corny jokes that made me laugh. The jokes were classic, they made sense, they were funny and they helped sell the product. Now I read the jokes and I wonder if I have gone stupid because I don't understand them! Now they don't make sense, they are not funny, they make me angry and they just plain suck. And I know these jokes are now sent in by sweet innocent little kids buuuuuuut.....they need to be fired, along with the marketing staff of Wonka candy. I know I am not the only one who has noticed this because I have people tell me all the time that the jokes suck. This has been going on for years and getting exponentially worse! Compiz Fusion on Gutsy Gibbon

One of the coolest improvements in the new Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) is the eye candy brought to us by the Compiz Fusion application. Not much of it is very useful in a functional way but it sure is cool! The install has zero configuration and playing around with it is nothing but fun. Here is a how-to and helpful setup for some of the cooler affects thanks to Ubuntu-tutorials

Install Compiz Config Settings Manager

To customize your configuration you’ll want to install the compiz config settings manager tool. You can use your favorite package manager front-end or the command line to install:

sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager

This will add an entry to your System > Preferences menu listed as “Advanced Desktop Effects Settings”.

Make sure that you have “extra effects” turned on by navigating to System > Preferences > Appearance, selecting the Visual Effects tab, and selecting Custom at the bottom. Clicking the Preferences button will also launch the Compiz Config Settings Manager.

Configuration / Shortcuts

The settings that I like include:

- rotate cube
- desktop cube
- cube caps
- expo (must have!)
- wobbly windows
- water effect
- group and tab windows
- shift switcher

Once you have these selected you’ll be interested in the keyboard shortcuts to use them listed below:

- rotate cube : ctrl-alt-arrow or ctrl-alt-left-click and drag
- expo : super (windows button)-e
- water effects : shift-f9 (toggle)
- group and tab : select window with super-s, group with super-t, ungroup with super-u
- shift switcher : super-tab

Cube affect

Once you successfully have the 3D effects enabled and have compizconfig-settings-manager installed navigate your way to “System > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Effects Settings”. Click on “General Options” at the top of the list and select the “Desktop Size” tab. The first slider on that tab is for “Horizontal Virtual Size”. Change this from two to four and close the window. You should now have four desktop panes for use with a cube vs the two desktop panes as default.
